Ways to Feed Your Kids for Free in Stapleton!

Are you aware of some of the “kids eat free” deals at our local Stapleton area restaurants? This may be a sign that I eat out too much but I’ve started to notice there are a lot of these deals around the area so I thought I’d share them. I’m sure there are more deals I’m not aware of so if you know of others please let me know so I can add them to the list! I know I don’t feel good if we get in the habit of eating out too much but life is busy and it happens…so we might as well get the kids fed for free.

Here are a few good “kids eat free” options:

Tuesdays:

- Famous Dave’s in Quebec Square. They usually have “Wilbur” the pig walking around playing with the kids. After a few trips my 4 year old confided in me on the drive home that she “thinks the pig that walks around giving out candy is not real and there might be a person inside!”)

Thursday:

- Wahoo Fish Taco in Northfield. This place is actually pretty healthy for eating out…lots of beans, rice and fish.

Sunday:

- Fat Jack’s Super Subs. A relatively new option to the area, it’s located at 3535 Quebec St behind the Sonic.

- GB Fish and Chips. Ok maybe not as healthy but just so delicious. This one is a little further away down at 5325 E Colfax but really not a bad trip down there at all and it’s worth it.

I’m sure each place has their own rules and restrictions. Know of any other deals I should add to the list?

Take a Bike Ride From Stapleton Around Rocky Mountain Arsenal Refuge

The weather is getting better and it’s a great weekend for a bike ride! Through an article in the Front Porch a few months ago I learned about a bike path that goes from here to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. I recently had a chance to make the trip a few times and it was a great ride. The first 20 minutes or so are pretty ugly and the path is convoluted but once you get there the ride is beautiful. Once you’re in the refuge there is virtually no traffic or people. It’s a peaceful, flat ride and you’ll likely even see some deer along the way. Once you get into the wooded area near the lakes it feels like you’re way out in the country even though your just minutes from home in Stapleton. If you’re going to ride with kids I’d say just drive up there and start from the refuge…the ride up with kids in traffic would not be fun.

The refuge is open from 6AM – 6PM.

Denver Century Ride in Stapleton June 15th!

It’s time again for the Denver Century Ride, a 100 mile bike race (I prefer to think of it as a ride rather than a race…) which starts and ends in Stapleton on June 15th. I did the 28 miler last year but this year I’ll be going the full distance (or at least that is what I’m signed up for). There are a lot of different route options with varying distances, so don’t feel like it’s 100 miles or you can’t do it. It’s a lot of fun and Stapleton dads if you need a hall pass to get away for the day I suggest you play the Father’s Day card cause it’s the same weekend. They can’t say no. If you don’t have kids you’ll have to come up with your own excuse.

The race starts and ends right here in Stapleton’s Central Park so it’s easy to pick up your race day packet from Cycleton and just ride right over to the starting line. Good grub, vendors and music afterwards. To sign up for the event or learn more about the details click here.

Wonderland releases floor plans for “Expressions” and “Heritage” series in Stapleton!

Wonderland and David Weekley Open New Model Homes in Stapleton!

Wonderland Homes and David Weekley Homes are two of the latest Stapleton builders to unveil their new model homes in Conservatory Green, the first Stapleton neighborhood North of I-70. Click here for the announcement on Forest City’s website. KB Home has already opened their models and the other builders will be unveiling models in the near future. All told there will be 15 new homes series in Conservatory Green and as of the end of April the builders have already sold 50 new homes in the area for 2013!

Standard Pacific Releases “Bloom” Preliminary Floor Plans for Stapleton

Standard Pacific has now released their preliminary floor plans for their up-coming single family home series known as “Bloom” for the Stapleton community. The homes will be built in Conservatory Green, the newest Stapleton neighborhood and the first one to be built North of I-70. (Did you know Stapleton builders already have about 50 homes under contract in this new area – it’s going great!). To check out the preliminary four Bloom floor plans click here. Plan # 3843 is my favorite on paper, I love the open layout on the main level, the fact that the great room is open to the second level and the way the 3 secondary bedrooms are distinctly separate from the master bedroom upstairs for added privacy!

Pricing on the floor plans is coming soon but I expect base pricing to start in the low $400k’s. (My guess is they will end in the high $400k’s and will easily get into the mid $500k’s after lot premiums and upgrades. We’ll know more soon.

Interested in buying a home in this series? Below are few other events you need to know about to get the home you want. By attending these events you can move yourself up the interest list so you will have a better chance of getting the home you want. Unlike a few years ago when homes were abundant getting the home you want now is not so easy so give yourself every advantage you can get!

The dusty shoe model home tour is Saturday May 4th from 10:00AM – Noon. At this event you’ll get a chance to tour the two model homes. They are modeling floor plan 3842 and floor plan 3843. (See link above to view floor plans). This event will happen at the intersection of 49th Drive and Uinta St in Conservatory Green.

The Design Studio Preview will be an opportunity for buyers to see the standards that will go into this series and also get a glimpse of some of the upgrades that will be available. This event will be Wednesday May 8th from 4:00PM – 6:00PM at their corporate office located at 7800 E Dorado Place Ste 220 Greenwood Village, CO 80111.

Lastly, the first lot release will be on Satuday May 11th at 9AM. More details to come on location. In this release Standard Pacific will offer 6 home sites located at the intersection of 50th Drive and Uinta St. These lots will be just steps from the Green Links as well as Prairie Basin, two great green spaces. All 6 lots are pre-planned, meaning it’s already determined which floor plan will be on which lot….another reason to figure out what you like early and give yourself every chance possible to get it. Build Raised Bed Gardens with Your Stapleton Neigbors – Here is How!

Last Saturday our Stapleton block got together and learned how to build and plant our own raised bed gardens with Bryant Mason, owner of Urban Farm Company of Colorado. I wanted to share our experience because I think other blocks in Stapleton may want to team up and do the same thing on their block. Here is what we did, hope it helps you build community and great gardens on your block!

We all chipped in and hired Bryant to come in and show us how to build a 4 ft x 4 ft raised garden bed in one of our neighbor’s backyards. He knew going in that our goal was to learn his techniques and then replicate them in our own yards all throughout the block. We now have 8 households doing raised beds along our little block which is going to be a real cool, uniting theme for the group! Plus almost all the gardens will be in the front yard to get more sunlight which I think will look really cool for curb appeal. So we all chipped in on the cost of the 4×4 bed and we looked at it as if we were paying for a lesson really. (The neighbor who got the bed built in their yard chipped in half the total cost since they received the most benefit) Bryant walked us through every step of the process…such as site selection for you bed, how to prepare the area, how to build the bed, what types of wood are best, what soils to use, how much sand to use, what compost to use, where to source all the materials, how to plant for high yield, when to plant, how much to plant, and more! I think the group walked away feeling they really got their money’s worth cause there is a lot to learn!

At this point we’ve purchased all our lumber and most of the neighbors have built their beds. Next we’re going to all chip in on the bulk delivery of soil, sand and compost through Bryant’s recommendations to save money. After that we’ll work on automating the water which Bryant is going to help us with as well!

Building gardens together with neighbors has so many benefits! You’ll build camaraderie among the neighbors, the kids will learn where food comes from, you’ll have fresh veggies (taste way better!), you’re doing something good for the environment and it’s just fun. Hopefully this summer we’ll reap the benefits of our work!

It’s a great place to grab some frozen yogurt with the kids or just pick up a frozen treat for yourself. Always interesting to see what combinations of toppings my kids come up with….marshmellow, m&m, gummy worm, oreo on strawberry yogurt….yummy. (If you are health nut and what I described makes you ill there are much more simple and appealing options…you choose your own toppings and portion size!)
